確實有此研究，但專家也提醒：陽光並無法「保護」或「預防」人體免受新冠病毒的侵害。雖然陽光可以殺死表面上的冠狀病毒，但殺菌速度不及飛沫傳染的速度，在陰影處或陽光強度較低的地方，陽光也無法對病毒傳播帶來多大影響。
生態與進化生物學系的Cory Merow也警告，在炎熱的月份，社交隔離和口罩仍然是必要的，因為該病毒可以在室內和密切接觸間大量繁殖。Merow表示根據他自己的研究，目前尚不清楚，夏季炎熱及其帶來的影響是否會減緩冠狀病毒的傳播。
